Annual General Meeting Brings Energy, Elections – and New Faces to the Committee

The branch’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held via Zoom on 12 June, brought together members from across all four nations of the UK for a lively and well-attended online gathering. The virtual format didn’t dampen enthusiasm, with members showing strong engagement, commitment, and unity throughout the meeting.
Committee Elections

All officer roles were filled through nominations and elections, with the following members confirmed in post:

Chair: Kenny Millard

Vice Chair: Jacqueline McShane

Secretary: Angela Sandles

Treasurer: Bruce McDowall

Communications Officer: Gwynfor Jones

Women’s Officer: Kath Burn

Casework and Membership Officer: Sue Lloyd

Although long-standing Treasurer Bruce McDowall expressed a wish to step down due to other commitments, he has agreed to continue in the role until a new treasurer is elected. Bruce noted that the position is neither difficult nor time-consuming and encouraged anyone with financial skills—or an interest in developing them—to get in touch.

The branch also acknowledged with gratitude the work of Lois McFarlane, who stepped down from her role as BAME Officer after a successful year of service. The position is now open, and members interested in supporting this vital work are warmly encouraged to apply.

The meeting concluded with a powerful and informative presentation by Mairin MacLeod, lead caseworker for the IWGB. Mairin shared insights on how the union can support foster carers facing challenges such as allegations, complaints, and workplace bullying. Members who would like a copy of the presentation notes can contact Clare, the branch coordinator on 07888 256978.

Growing Stronger Together
The branch is on a strong trajectory, thanks to the growing engagement of its members. As the committee emphasized during the AGM, collective strength lies in participation, so spread the word, and help grow our community of empowered foster carers.

Welcome to Our New Officers

Sue Lloyd – Casework and Membership Officer

We’re delighted to welcome Sue Lloyd to the committee. With extensive experience as a former steward for the Royal College of Nursing and a dedicated foster carer, Sue brings a unique combination of advocacy skills and lived experience. She’s already making a significant impact supporting our Edinburgh and Lothians groups, where she’s helping to foster safe, supportive spaces for carers to connect and share.

Kath Burn – Women’s Officer

We’re equally excited to introduce Kath Burn, a tireless campaigner and foster carer from Northumberland. Kath has been instrumental in achieving major wins in her region, including ending a 15-year freeze on allowances and advocating for fairer, per-child payments. Her courage, tenacity, and unwavering support for fellow carers will be a major asset to our committee.

Get Involved
As the AGM highlighted, we are building a stronger, more connected branch—and there’s a place for everyone to contribute. Whether you’re interested in committee roles or want to support in other ways, now is a great time to get involved.

Together, we’re growing a powerful voice for foster carers across the UK.
